Ottawa, October 15, 2019 – The Ottawa Board of Trade (OBoT) and the Ottawa Business Journal (OBJ) announced today during the Mayor’s Breakfast that the 2019 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award is Dr. Jack Kitts.

Dr. Kitts’s 18-year tenure as president and CEO of the Ottawa Hospital, which began shortly after the amalgamation of the General, Civic and Riverside hospitals. His successful merger of the hospitals, creating a team oriented culture, his championing of research and his efforts to lay the groundwork for the planned “super hospital” for Ottawa were important factors in his selection.

“We are delighted to recognize Dr. Jack Kitts along with dozens of the region’s top entrepreneurs and companies on November 22nd.” announced Ian Sherman, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Trade, Board of Directors. “For all his contributions to health care in a career spanning nearly 40 years as a doctor and administrator, we wanted to honour his work in our community and the future of Ottawa.”

Recipients of the award are selected based on the following criteria:
● Founding or leading a remarkable organization with large scale economic impact
● Innovation and perseverance in a changing business world
● Strong leadership that inspires others
● Remarkable community involvement

The recipient is named every fall and celebrated at the Best Ottawa Business Awards (the BOBs), which will be held on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Westin Ottawa. Recipients are also recognized with a marble plaque mounted in the Plaza of Honour, an outdoor amphitheatre at the World Exchange Plaza. Past recipients of the award include Jim Durrell, John Kelly, Wes Nicol, Roger Greenberg, Shirley Westeinde, Michael Potter, John Ruddy and Gordon Reid.

About Dr. Jack Kitts

Dr. Jack Kitts received his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1980. He completed a three year tour of duty as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces before returning to the University of Ottawa to complete specialty training in anesthesia and a research fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco.
Dr. Kitts then joined the Department of Anesthesia at the Civic Hospital where he became Research Director, Medical Director of the Preoperative Assessment Clinic, and subsequently appointed Chief of Anesthesia and Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa in 1995.

In 1998, Dr. Kitts was appointed Vice-President of Medical Affairs and led the medical staff during a complex restructuring in which three hospitals and five large programs were merged into The Ottawa Hospital.

He completed his master’s degree in business administration in 2001 and was named President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital in February 2002. Dr. Kitts continues in that position to this day, managing a staff of 12,000.

The Ottawa Hospital is recognized as one of the largest and most important research and teaching hospitals in Canada. Its research institute is one of the foremost institutes in Canada, involving more than 1500 scientists, clinical investigators, trainees and staff.
